SPOTS 'N STRIPES RANCH
HERE WE GO! Our 2004 babies have begun
to arrive!
This gorgeous baby is the smallest
zebra we have ever bred. Her mama is a maiden mare, which may be part of the
reason, and we think she is super special, with her tiny muzzle and dished
face. We don't think she'll be leaving the
ranch soon, as she is a second generation trained baby, (or will be), as her mama
is a well trained mare that allows us full access to her
baby, so we'll likely hang on to her, train her fully, then do the same
with her baby, and for the first time ever, we will have 3 generations of
trained zebras to compare to first generation and second generation trained zebras.
The baby's training has begun in the stall with her mom, so we'll let
mom do the feeding for awhile. The only downside to that is that we'd love to take
her places already, so we'll just leave her with mom til we feel the need to get
her out for some exposure. We're going to try to take her away from mom for a
couple of hours in two weeks to show her in weanling and color classes at
our first show of the year, then
pop her right back in with mom.
Unfortunately, our 'night watchman' fell asleep just before the blessed event, and woke
up 10 minutes later, so the photos are of her first steps, sucking my finger (who's my
mom, anyway!), and nursing from mom for the first time. You can see she is still wet.
Most of the photos are with night vision photography which is why they appear with a
green hue. She was born at 1:30 a.m.
We did have a video camera running throughout the night, and caught mom laying down within
the camera range, but our baby was just out of camera range. However, she popped back into
range when she stood and fell the first couple of times. We feel blessed that we were able
to get mom actually foaling her out, and will try again with another one to stay
awake to get better video. Please enjoy the rest of the pictures.
Call or e-mail us if you see one you just can't
resist!
We are
pleased to present:

All of our babies are trained to respect, halter, lead, lunge, hot walker, trailer and have their feet trimmed before you get them! Yes, you will pay more for a trained zebra, just like for a trained horse! It is vitally important, however, to begin training a zebra baby at just a few days of age in order to optimise the extent to which the individual may be trained as an adult zebra. We will also teach every new zebra purchaser the art of how we trained their baby, and we urge continued training with us periodically to progressively turn your little one into a 'trained zebra'. Zebra training is $675 per month including board and feed.
